Someone thinking about her ultrasound results

If you recently learned you may be pregnant, you are likely wondering about an ultrasound and what to expect. Your first ultrasound is essential in learning more about your pregnancy and options, and protecting your health.

This vital scan provides medical information that a pregnancy test alone cannot show. Contact us for more information regarding our limited ultrasounds and request a free and confidential appointment today.

What Happens During an Ultrasound Appointment

During an ultrasound, a trained technician or medical professional uses a handheld device called a transducer. This device sends sound waves into the body. The sound waves bounce off structures inside the body (specifically inside the uterus for a pregnancy ultrasound) and return to the device, creating images that appear on a screen.

Ultrasound technology allows healthcare providers to monitor pregnancy development and view the uterus without using radiation.

Your appointment may include one of two types of ultrasound scans, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

An abdominal ultrasound is the type most people are familiar with. During this scan, gel is spread on your abdomen, and the transducer moves across the skin to capture images.

In early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended because it can provide a clearer image. In this scan, a wand-like probe is inserted into the vagina to obtain detailed images of the pregnancy.

What to Expect During the Scan

The ultrasound itself is usually brief and should not be painful. During an abdominal ultrasound, you may feel light pressure as the transducer moves across your abdomen. If you have a full bladder, you may feel some discomfort from the pressure.

If a transvaginal ultrasound is performed, a lubricant will be added to the probe and either the technician will insert it or you can insert it yourself.

During the scan, the technician will capture images of your pregnancy. At Cypress Valley Clinic, you can see the images on the screen. Some ultrasound providers may not show the screen, but you should be able to ask if you’d like to see.

What Information Does the Ultrasound Provide?

Your first ultrasound helps confirm important details about your pregnancy. The scan will identify the location of the pregnancy (in your uterus or ectopic), estimate how far along you are (gestational age) and your due date, and confirm the presence of a heartbeat

These details can help guide your next steps and ensure that certain medical concerns, such as ectopic pregnancy and early miscarriage, are identified quickly. An ectopic pregnancy is very serious and can become a medical emergency if left untreated.
