If your girlfriend recently found out she’s pregnant, you may feel unsure about what to do next. You want to be supportive, and that includes helping with finances. You may wonder if you can add her to your insurance coverage.

In most cases, the answer is no. But there are still ways you can help her during her pregnancy. Healthcare is essential right now, no matter which pregnancy option she’s leaning toward.

Why Insurance Usually Doesn’t Cover Her

Health insurance typically only covers individuals in a legal relationship, such as a spouse or domestic partner. Unless you’re married or legally tied to your girlfriend, your insurance plan likely won’t extend to her.

Even if you could add her to your plan, many insurance companies—and state laws—place limits on abortion coverage. Some states, including Texas, only allow it in cases of life endangerment or serious health risks.

Private insurance plans may or may not cover it, and they are also subject to state laws and restrictions.

What Insurance Options Does She Have?

Even if your insurance won’t cover your girlfriend, she may still qualify for health coverage on her own. Whether she’s considering abortion or another option, she’ll need healthcare coverage during pregnancy.

Insurance will prevent her from running up an enormous bill if she has to go to the emergency room for some reason, and she’ll have access to prenatal care if she decides to carry to term for parenting or adoption.

Here are a few paths you can help her explore:

Texas Medicaid

If your girlfriend meets income requirements, she may be eligible for Medicaid. Texas Medicaid covers pregnancy-related services, but abortion coverage is only available in limited cases, such as if her life is at risk.

Employer-Sponsored Insurance

If your girlfriend has a job, she should check with her employer about health benefits. If she’s part-time, she may need to switch to full-time to be eligible.

Private Insurance

Private insurance (shopping for a policy on your own) is another option, though it’s usually more expensive. However, any kind of coverage is better than none during pregnancy.
